Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Rob Portman (R-OH) are leading the fight to restore a “Buy America” provision in the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). The provision was included in a Senate bill that passed with strong bipartisan support, but has been removed from the compromise package reached in the House and Senate conference. The two Ohio Senators were joined by 23 of their Senate colleagues in sending a letter to House and Senate leadership in support of inclusion of the provision in the final bill. A copy of the letter is available here.
The Buy America provision of the bill would require American-made steel and iron be used in infrastructure projects funded by the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF). Taxpayer-funded projects should utilize domestically melted and poured steel in order to ensure that the full benefit of infrastructure investment is realized in the U.S. economy. These measures have a major impact on the domestic industry and its workforce.
SMA strongly supports the inclusion of Buy America provisions in WRDA, and appreciates the efforts of Senators Brown and Portman, as well as numerous other Congressional leaders.
