Good for America: SMA Comments on Senate Passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Today, the United States Senate passed a $1 trillion infrastructure bill with a bipartisan vote of 69-30. In response to the vote, Philip K. Bell, president of the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) issued the following statement

“The bipartisan passage of this infrastructure bill is monumental. SMA appreciates the hard work and compromise of our elected representatives in doing what is best for our country. With approximately $550 billion in new federal spending towards steel-intensive, traditional infrastructure projects, our nation can rebuild roads and bridges, shore up coastlines against climate change, protect public utility systems from cyberattacks, make drinking water safer, and modernize the electric grid. Public transit also gets a boost, as do airports and freight rail. There is something in this bill for everyone. We are particularly pleased that this bill includes strong Buy America provisions to ensure that the taxpayer dollars spent on infrastructure projects are built by Americans for Americans.

Bell added, “as this bill moves to the House of Representatives, our nation is poised to create more jobs and become more competitive. As American steelmakers, SMA members provide the cleanest, most sustainably produced steel in the world. This is key in rebuilding our Nation’s infrastructure. We commend Senate leaders Schumer and McConnell for getting this done.”
