Tampa, FL, September 19 – The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) has announced its 2019 awards recipients for steel industry excellence recognizing efforts of the domestic EAF steel industry.  Liberty Steel received SMA’s Don B. Daily Achievement in Safety Excellence award and Nucor Decatur was awarded SMA’s Achievement in Community Service award during a joint meeting of the SMA Safety and SMA HR Committees in Tampa, FL.

Liberty Steel Peoria received recognition for SMA’s prestigious Don B. Daily award for their significant safety improvements over the course of 2019. Liberty saw tremendous reductions in recordable case rates and increased employee engagement resulting from investments in safety training and restructuring its safety programs.

Nucor Decatur was also recognized for Excellence in Community Involvement for their willingness to use resources and well-trained employees to help with recovery efforts from hurricanes Michael and Harvey.  SMA also noted their impressive efforts to educate the community about confined space entry and rescue as part of OSHA’s Safe + Sound Week campaign.

SMA also announced SSAB Americas will receive the SMA Achievement in Environmental Stewardship and Recycling Award and Commercial Metals Company will be honored as the recipient of the SMA Achievement in Innovation Award. These two companies will be recognized at SMA’s annual member’s conference next June.

In announcing the awards, Dave Sumoski, SMA Chairman and Executive Vice President Merchant and Rebar Products at Nucor, said, “We are pleased to recognize 21st century steelmakers who are committed to safety, meaningful community involvement, world class environmental stewardship and product innovation. We applaud this year’s award recipients for their accomplishments.”
