Washington, D.C. – The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) presented the James F. Collins Achievement in Advocacy Award to Mark D. Millett, president, CEO and co-founder of Steel Dynamics, Inc. Millett was presented with the award during the joint SMA & AISI Annual Members Conference in Washington, D.C.

“Mark continues to be a strong advocate of the domestic steel industry through efforts to educate Congress and senior members of the Trump administration on policy priorities,” said Philip K. Bell, president of the SMA. “Mark has testified before the Congressional Steel Caucus, meets with senior government officials, and has numerous media appearances advocating for domestic steel producers. His unique ability to support the industry and encourage the engagement of others make him a deserving recipient of this SMA honor.”

Dave Sumoski, SMA chairman and executive vice president of engineered bar products at Nucor Corporation also commented, “Mark’s work on steel industry matters involving U.S. government trade policy compliance and international trade laws demonstrates a level of commitment needed to influence public policy decisions at the highest levels.”

The James F. Collins Achievement in Advocacy Award is one of SMA’s most prestigious steel industry awards and is named in honor of SMA founder, James F. Collins, for his leadership and integral role in the growth of the domestic EAF industry. This award was established to recognize a person that has made a significant contribution to advocating public policy changes that serve the domestic steel industry.

SMA is the largest steel industry trade association in the United States, primarily representing North American Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel producers. EAF steelmakers account for almost 70 percent of domestic steelmaking capacity using an innovative, 21st-century production process that is less energy intensive and has a lower carbon footprint than blast furnace steelmaking. Through EAF steel production, more steel is recycled than aluminum, paper, and plastic combined. SMA’s 25 EAF producer members and over 100 associate members have operations in 43 states.  For more information check out our website at www.steelnet.org or our Facebook page.
