Today, Barry Schneider, president and COO of Steel Dynamics and chairman of the Steel Manufacturers Association, testified before Congress at the annual State of Steel hearing. The hearing shines a critical spotlight on an industry that serves as the backbone of the American economy.

Mr. Schneider emphasized that the steel industry is well positioned, citing an administration focused on rebuilding U.S. manufacturing and a Congress that delivered historic tax reforms.

He cautioned, however, that the industry cannot afford complacency. China continues to dump excess steel capacity into global markets at historic levels, interest rates remain elevated, and America’s permitting system urgently requires further reform.

Mr. Schneider concluded by urging continued vigilance from the administration in enforcing the Section 232 steel tariff to prevent a surge of unfairly traded imports and called on Congress to advance policies that allow American manufacturing to compete and thrive.

Joining Mr. Schneider on the panel, Ben Pickett, executive vice president of Nucor and vice chairman of SMA, told lawmakers that American steel companies like Nucor are helping to build a dynamic and secure domestic economy and creating high-wage jobs for American workers.
