In response to a bipartisan letter from the Congressional Steel Caucus to President Joseph R. Biden calling for the continuation of Section 232 tariffs and quotas on imported steel, Philip K. Bell, president of the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) issued the following statement.
“It is good to see over 50 members of Congress support a bipartisan letter that reinforces the necessity and importance of existing steel tariffs and quotas to steelmakers. We commend the efforts of Steel Caucus leaders, Congressmen Lamb, Mrvan, Bost, and Crawford, for writing a timely letter to the President, which garnered wide Congressional support. The 232 tariffs and quotas have reduced unfairly traded foreign imports, increased domestic capacity utilization, and encouraged investment for American steelmakers.”
Bell added, “SMA looks forward to working with the Administration and Congress to address structural issues of global excess steel capacity, state-owned enterprises, and subsidies that continue to plague domestic steel producers.”
