SMA Comments on Ambassador Jayme White’s Meeting with Mexico’s Undersecretary of Economy

The Steel Manufacturers Association endorses Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Jayme White’s position on the surge in steel imports from Mexico.

“The SMA supports continued application of pressure by USTR on the Mexican government to fulfill its commitment to better monitor, and police imported steel products that are produced outside Mexico but travel back through that country as a way to penetrate the U.S. market,” SMA President Philip K. Bell said. “Mexico is one of our largest trading partners. Ambassador White’s comments concerning import surges and the need to continue consultations regarding the USMCA are necessary to help ensure that both sides continue working toward a stable and fair trade relationship in the region.”

Ambassador White met yesterday with Alejandro Encinas, Mexico’s undersecretary of economy for foreign trade.
