SMA Praises Senate Announcement of Bipartisan Permitting Reform Agreement

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Steel Manufacturers Association Executive Vice President Brandon Farris released the following statement:

“The Steel Manufacturers Association strongly applauds Sens. Shelley Moore Capito (WV), Sheldon Whitehouse (RI), Mike Lee (UT) and Martin Heinrich (NM) for reaching a bipartisan permitting agreement that will unleash America’s next industrial century.

“America’s steelmakers have $47 billion in announced and underway investments. Every announcement depends on the ability to receive permits in a timely manner.

“For too long, America’s broken permitting system has turned the ability to receive a permit into a barrier to job creation and economic growth. This bipartisan agreement represents a major step toward changing that. By establishing more reliable timelines, creating greater certainty and breaking down longstanding barriers to building, Congress can help ensure that projects across the economy move from the drawing board to the job site.

“The Steel Manufacturers Association commends the Senators for their bipartisan leadership and is committed to working with Congress to move meaningful permitting reform across the finish line.

“America is ready to build. Let’s get it done.”
