SMA Statement on Michael Regan EPA Confirmation

Washington, DC – (March 11, 2020) – Philip K. Bell, president, Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA), issued a statement following the confirmation of Michael Regan as administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):

“The Steel Manufacturers Association congratulates newly confirmed EPA administrator, Michael Regan. His experience, reputation as a solution-focused consensus builder, and commitment to science, technology and transparency will greatly benefit the agency. It is our hope that Mr. Regan’s leadership will incorporate a regulatory approach that includes multiple stakeholders, while recognizing that a healthy environment should not come at the expense of jobs and economic recovery.”

Bell added, “The domestic steel industry is a great example of American environmental innovation, which has been recognized by the EPA previously. American steelmakers produce the most sustainable steel in the world with the lowest CO2 intensity of the major steel producing countries. SMA members make steel with up to 75 percent lower CO2 emissions that traditional steelmaking. We look forward to working with the new administrator and continuing our long-standing relationship with the EPA.”
