The Steel Manufacturers Association provided a statement for the record to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works ahead of a hearing examining reforms to federal environmental permitting laws. The hearing comes as SMA continues to push for permitting reform legislation that will accelerate construction of steel production facilities and the critical energy infrastructure needed to power our industry. 

“Steel manufacturers are investing in America’s communities, deploying $25 billion in capital here in the United States to modernize, expand, and construct facilities; unfortunately, many of these investments are delayed by our nation’s cumbersome permitting laws,” wrote SMA Executive Vice President, Brandon Farris. “Commonsense reforms that bring predictability to the federal permitting process will support capital investment and job creation, and promote affordable, reliable energy, while ensuring America continues to be a leader in environmental protection. We look forward to working with you to advance…permitting reform legislation.”
