WASHINGTON, DC – January 28, 2021 – The Steel Manufacturers Association’s (SMA) Board of Directors today announced the election of Mark Millett, president and chief executive officer of Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI), to serve as Chairman of the Board for the 2021-2022 term.
“I am excited to work with SMA membership and staff to confront the challenges and embrace the opportunities that face our industry,” said Millett. “The SMA is uniquely positioned to represent electric arc furnace steel producers, who over the last 30 years, have emerged as the dominant force in North American steelmaking with the lowest CO2 emissions in the world. Success will include our collective efforts to articulate the policy implications and impacts of a strong domestic steel industry.”
Millett added, “I am also extremely appreciative of the commitment and engagement that SMA member companies bring to our organization. They are the key to our success.”
Millett is a co-founder of SDI and recipient of the AIST Steelmaker of the Year Award and the SMA Iverson-Selig Award. He has held a variety of senior management positions and served on the board of directors since SDI’s inception in 1993. Under Mark’s leadership, SDI has experienced significant growth, expansion, and portfolio diversification resulting in the company becoming one of the most operationally and financially successful steel producers in the United States.
SMA president, Philip K. Bell commented, “I am pleased to have one of our industry’s most respected leaders at the helm of an organization that supports safe and sustainable steelmaking. Mark’s leadership comes at a time when the American steel industry is investing and modernizing to better build businesses, lives and communities. We have a tremendous story to share and I am glad Mark is here to help tell it.”
Additionally, Bob Venable, president and chief operating officer of Charter Manufacturing, was elected as vice chairman of SMA’s Board of Directors. Kevin Mullen, president, Sterling Steel will serve as SMA treasurer, and Dave Sumoski, chief operating officer, Nucor, becomes SMA’s immediate past chairman.
