WASHINGTON, D.C. —Today, Steel Manufacturers Association Executive Vice President Brandon Farris released the following statement:

“The Steel Manufacturers Association strongly applauds the Administration for exposing the growing danger of transshipment. China did not abandon its predatory steel practices, it simply changed the route. China is now exporting more steel than the world’s next four largest steel industries combined, and it increasingly uses third countries to evade U.S. trade enforcement and funnel that excess into the American market.

“The Section 232 steel tariffs have been a resounding success, driving new investment, strengthening domestic production and reducing harmful imports. Their effectiveness forced China to adapt. Through its Belt and Road Initiative, Beijing has established a global network of state-sponsored manufacturing that enables Chinese excess capacity to circumvent America’s trade remedies. Transshipment is simply trade cheating by another name.

“We appreciate that the Administration has prioritized confronting a problem that has plagued domestic steelmakers and cost American jobs for far too long. We look forward to continuing our work with the White House to strengthen our industry and level the playing field. Give American steelmakers a fair fight, and they will outwork, out innovate and outcompete anyone in the world.”
