SMA President Philip K. Bell issued the following statement today:

“The Steel Manufacturers Association thanks President Trump for fighting to put American workers first. For far too long our jobs and our economy have been threatened by unfair trade. Today, when he signed the Fair and Reciprocal Plan, President Trump boldly declared to the world that the United States will no longer be taken advantage of.

“The steel industry has seen firsthand how China and other countries illegally dump heavily subsidized, cheap steel into America. This behavior threatens our national and economic security. More than ever, we need to build our domestic manufacturing capabilities. If we are going to remain world leaders in energy or defense or artificial intelligence, it will require the strength of American-made steel.

“Today’s actions are another important step in President Trump’s support for the domestic steel industry, its workers, and the communities that depend on them. By reinstating and closing loopholes on the 232 tariffs, adopting the America First Trade Policy and signing the Fair and Reciprocal Plan, President Trump has leveled the playing field for American workers. On a level playing field, Americans can outcompete anyone.
