SMA President Philip K. Bell issued the following statement today:
“The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) today led an “industry sign-on letter” to the Senate Finance and House Ways and Means Committees urging action on the Leveling the Playing Field 2.0 Act. We appreciate Senators Todd Young (IN) and Tina Smith (MN) and Representatives Beth Van Duyne (TX) and Terri Sewell (AL) for reintroducing this bipartisan, bicameral legislation. When passed, the Leveling the Playing Field legislation will send a strong signal that America will not allow China to dominate critical manufacturing.
“Joining SMA on the letter are the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM), the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the American Wire Producers Association (AWPA), the Cold Finished Steel Bar Institute (CFSBI), the Committee on Pipe and Tube Imports (CPTI), the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA), the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA), the United States Cattlemen’s Association (USCA) and the U.S. OCTG Manufacturers Association (USOMA).
“To monopolize critical supply chains, China developed a global infrastructure, transportation, trade and production network referred to as the Belt and Road Initiative. Our current trade laws have not kept up with China’s constantly evolving threat to domestic manufacturing. The Leveling the Playing Field 2.0 Act was designed to give our government the appropriate tools to safeguard impacted industries and American workers.
“We look forward to working with the Congressional sponsors to support American workers and give our government the tools to fight unfair trade.”
