WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Steel Manufacturers Association issued the following statement of support:

The Steel Manufacturers Association supports H.R. 6500, a continuing resolution to keep the federal government open and operating through later this fall.

Government shutdowns serve no one, and steel manufacturers depend on critical trade and infrastructure programs extended under this bill.

For American steelmakers, federal trade authorities are essential to maintaining a level playing field against foreign competitors that rely on subsidies, overcapacity, and other unfair practices. Even a partial government shutdown undermines trade enforcement efforts and creates unnecessary uncertainty for manufacturers.

Furthermore, the continuing resolution includes language extending the current highway bill, providing time for leaders in the House and Senate to reach agreement on a long-term surface transportation reauthorization. This means state departments of transportation can continue work on critical infrastructure projects that drive demand for American-made steel.

We urge the full House to pass the continuing resolution, providing the stability needed to keep the government functioning while giving Congress additional time to complete full-year appropriations bills that strengthen American manufacturing, support American workers, and bolster our nation’s economic and national security.
