A columnist in the Baltimore Sun, Daniel Rodricks, urged the government to use American-made recycled steel in the bridge that eventually replaces the Key Bridge, which fell into the Patapsco River after a container ship struck it in the early hours of March 26.
To make sure it could be done, Rodricks turned to an authority on low-emissions, scrap-based steel: SMA President Philip K. Bell.
Bell explained that “the steel being salvaged could be repurposed to make more steel that might ultimately end up in the new bridge. … And the steel industry has plenty of domestic steel-making capacity so that this [new] bridge can be built with steel made by Americans.”
